Austin FC traded homegrown midfielder Owen Wolff to Sporting Kansas City for $4.5 million guaranteed, up to $3.1 million more in performance incentives, and a sell-on percentage of a future transfer, the club announced.
Interim head coach Davy Arnaud said in the club release that the talks went back to December of the previous year and that the club was willing to grant Wolff’s wish to play elsewhere if the offer matched the player. “We feel that this is the right move for the Club as we continue to position ourselves for long-term success,” Arnaud said.
What Wolff was in Austin
The club said Wolff came through the Austin FC Academy and became the club’s first homegrown signing in September 2021, at 16. He was the youngest player to appear for the first team, in a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City on Nov. 3, 2021, and the club’s youngest goalscorer, at 18, in a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake on March 11, 2023.
The allocation-money figure
Major League Soccer’s roster profiles, published Sept. 17 and dated as of Sept. 15, listed each club’s remaining 2026 General Allocation Money. The Austin Chronicle reported that the figure published for Austin FC was $1,970,454, and that the club then said on its social channels that the Wolff trade will raise the total to $4,970,454 on Sept. 30. The Chronicle said that step would put Austin first on the league’s allocation-money chart. MLS noted that the published profiles do not update for transactions after Sept. 15.
The sporting director who inherits that flexibility is Khaled El-Ahmad, named chief soccer officer on Aug. 25.
