Florian Wirtz had two assists in the first half and two goals in the second to lead Germany to a 4-3 comeback win over Switzerland in their friendly at St Jakob Park.

In a thrilling encounter, Dan Ndoye put Switzerland ahead with 17 minutes on the clock but it did not take the Germans long to get themselves back on level terms as Jonathan Tah equalised after 26 minutes.

Breel Embolo restored the home side’s advantage four minutes before the break but Serge Gnabry ensured they went into the interval on level terms, scoring two minutes into stoppage-time.

Wirtz put Germany ahead for the first time on the night with 61 minutes gone but Joel Monteiro pulled the Swiss level again, but Wirtz had the final say when he hit the winner five minutes from time.

Switzerland went ahead when Ndoye was given far too much space out on the left wing and he cut inside as the German defence backed off and he fired a left-footed shot from a tight angle beyond Oliver Baumann.

But the visitors were level in the 26th minute as Wirtz’s corner was met by Tah, who evaded his marker to head home.

Back came the Swiss, though, and four minutes before half-time they retook the lead.

Silvan Widmer was afforded far too much time and space from Germany and his ball into the box picked out Embolo, who held off the attention of Tah to nod home a fine finish.

Fabian Rieder almost extended Switzerland’s lead moments later but saw his effort from distance come back off the woodwork.

And with the clock running down at the end of the first half, Germany pulled themselves level. Wirtz found himself some space and a sublime pass picked out Gnabry and he made no mistake to make it 2-2.

Germany went ahead for the first time — just after the hour mark — with a piece of magic from Wirtz.

Switzerland were slow to set up defensively from a corner and the ball was played short to Wirtz as he curled a superb right-footed effort home from the edge of the box.

But Switzerland were not done and Monteiro made it 3-3 when he worked enough space from the Germany defence to slot home a delightful effort from 20 yards.

Wirtz though, had the last laugh. The visitors quickly moved the ball down the right and the Liverpool forward was given far too much space in the middle and when the ball was worked to him, he picked his spot to curl home the winner.
