Manchester United are set to revamp their midfield in the summer, with two additions a possibility.
Casemiro, who has started every game under Michael Carrick, has already announced his departure come the end of the season.
Manuel Ugarte, who was signed in 2024 to replace the Brazilian, has proven to be a huge disappointment, and INEOS are prepared to cut their losses.
Given Mason Mount’s injury record and the uncertainty surrounding Bruno Fernandes’ future, the Red Devils could do with two world-class additions in the middle of the park.
United need more than one midfielder
It is well known that the co-owners are huge fans of players with Premier League experience, which explains why Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are on the list.
Sandro Tonali of Newcastle has also joined the list, but all four are expected to cost a bomb. Not to mention that the Nottingham Forest ace looks set to head to the blue side of Manchester.
The Brighton and Hove Albion star’s form is not exactly inspiring confidence at the moment, which is why the 20-time English league champions have been forced to broaden their search.
That hunt has taken them to VfB Stuttgart, where Angelo Stiller is ruling the roost. The German is comfortably one of the finest midfield orchestrators in the Bundesliga at present.
Why Angelo Stiller is perfect
According to Fotmob, the 24-year-old ranks in the 96th percentile for chances created and possession won back in the final third among his midfield peers.
This shows how effortlessly he can bring a mixture of silk and steel from the base of the midfield, something United need desperately.
Such a unique skillset is exactly why United’s director of recruitment Christopher Vivell and director of football Jason Wilcox are huge fans.
This information comes courtesy of the reliable Ben Jacobs. “Manchester United have narrowed their midfield targets significantly.
Vivell and Wilcox are huge fans
“About two months ago, they had 8–12 names in discussion, but now the shortlist focuses on Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and possibly Angelo Stiller and Sandro Tonali.
“Their ideal summer plan would be to sign two from that group as a midfield pairing. Other options could still come up, but if they miss out on these priorities, they’ll have to pivot to alternatives.
“Angelo Stiller is high in Man United’s thinking and is appreciated by Christopher Vivell and Jason Wilcox.”
The Germany international’s ability cannot be questioned. But whether he can adapt to the physicality of the Premier League remains to be seen.
