Meet Hafyan, a Special Olympian Badminton A player from Malaysia whose lifelong love for this sport helped him grow in his self-confidence and purpose.

Hafyan has loved badminton since he was a young child, picking up a racket for the first time when he was just 9 years old. He is now 21 years old, but when he was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 15, it affected his brain and changed many aspects of his life. Despite these challenges, Hafiyan’s passion for badminton never faded.

In 2023 he joined Special Olympics Malaysia He returned to the field in a new way, surrounded by teammates, coaches and a community that believed in his abilities.

Through his determination and training, the coach’s guidance, and family support, Hafian became more confident in his abilities. His parents talked about how his participation in Special Olympics helped him grow into a more self-confident person, on and off the field.

On the field, Hafyan now not only focuses on improving his skills, but also takes pride in helping mentor his teammates as they grow and learn with him.

Badminton is also a family affair. Hafyan’s father, who has been his coach since he was 10, coaches several Special Olympics Malaysia badminton players, supporting them in developing their skills and confidence through the sport.

For Hafiyan, badminton is more than just a game. He credits sports as a way to build confidence, support others, and be part of a community that celebrates the ability of every athlete, while always working hard and striving to do their best.
