Derek Chisora brands former heavyweight champion a ‘quitter’

Derek Chisora’s time in the sport is coming to an end, but that has not stopped the 43-year-old veteran from throwing out some final jibes to his heavyweight rivals, branding one former world champion of the division as a ‘quitter’.

Chisora has twice challenged for the heavyweight crown himself, during a career that has spanned across almost two decades, coming up short against Vitali Klitschko in Munich back in 2012 and then again against Tyson Fury 10 years later.

After that defeat to ‘The Gypsy King’, fight fans encouraged Chisora to hang up the gloves but the Zimbabwe-born, British fan-favourite refused those requests and decided to continue in the sport, with the goal of reaching 50 professional fights.

To the surprise of many, Chisora has now strung together three consecutive victories ahead of his planned career finale against Deontay Wilder next weekend, despite the fact that he now sits as the number two world contender with the IBF.

With that belt possibly becoming vacant in the near future, and Frank Sanchez expected to fight Richard Torres Jr. in a final eliminator, there is every chance that the IBF could call for the victor of that fight to face ‘Del Boy’ for the full world title, if he beats Wilder.

However, Chisora maintains that his clash with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ will be his last, even if victorious.

Still, he had some choice words to say about his fellow heavyweights, telling DAZN Boxing that former IBF world champion Daniel Dubois is a ‘quitter’, during a game of one-word association.

The “quitter” label has followed Dubois since 2020, when he failed to beat the count against Joe Joyce after suffering a serious eye injury, and again in 2023, when he was counted out against Oleksandr Usyk – though both incidents have been widely debated, particularly the Joyce fight, for which the young Brit has even been praised by some for making the right call for his future career.

Dubois has the chance to become a two-time heavyweight champion when he takes on current WBO ruler Fabio Wardley on May 9.
