Manchester United are on the brink of an agreement with Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire over new contracts, the reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed.

Uncertainty

The pair’s futures have been the subject of intense speculation over the past few months.

Mainoo fell out of favour under now-sacked head coach Ruben Amorim and at one point appeared destined to leave United. Last summer, he asked the club to let him leave on loan. His request was declined.

The midfielder’s situation failed to improve under Amorim and he was believed to be exploring his options ahead of the January transfer window, with Napoli, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich among the clubs mentioned to be interested in his services.

Fast forward and Mainoo’s fortunes have completely transformed under caretaker boss Michael Carrick. Mainoo has started all nine games Carrick has taken charge of and has been key to the success United have enjoyed in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Maguire’s terms were set to expire at the end of the campaign. Like Mainoo, Maguire has started all nine of the games in which Carrick has been in the dugout.

Negotiations with both sets of representatives have been ongoing and David Ornstein has now indicated that a breakthrough is imminent.

Breakthrough within reach

Ornstein reveals, “Manchester United are close to an agreement with Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire over new contracts.”

“Although work still needs to be done, negotiations are now at an advanced stage as United look to conclude terms with both players.”

“Mainoo is currently tied down until June 2027 — with an option to prolong by 12 months — and the proposed extension would take him through to the summer of 2031 on a significantly improved salary.”

Ornstein adds, “Maguire is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of this season, however a fresh one-year deal with an option to add an extra 12 months is in the process of being finalised.”

The Red Devils return to action this evening when they take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Kick-off is at 8pm.
