NEW YORK – The unparalleled 3-on-3 league will crown its second champion Wednesday night when it faces Phantom BC and the No. 2 seed Myst at Sephora Arena in Miami.
The Phantoms beat No. 6 Vinyl 83-75 behind Kelsey Bloom’s 31 points, and the Mist staged a 16-point comeback over the fifth-seeded Breeze 73-69 in a two-game semifinal at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The semi-final matches were played in front of a crowd of 18,231 after the league announced the change of venue on 13 February. The players played two close and entertaining matches, with Eric Ogunbowale sealing the win for Mist with a three-pointer.
“Everyone was putting on a show, and that’s what you want for the fans,” Bloom said.
The night also marked a homecoming for Unrivaled co-founder Brianna Stewart, who plays for the New York Liberty. Fellow co-founder Navisa Collier attended the event, as well as other league stars and celebrities, including Ashton Kutcher, Hilary Knight and Jason Sudeikis.
“This is my home,” said Stewart, who led Mist with 23 points. “Once I knew (the semifinals in Brooklyn) was going to happen, I said to myself: ‘My team has to be here. I want to play in this game.’
The Phantoms were the top seed in the postseason, but the club reached the final under adverse circumstances. On Sunday, star midfielder Aaliyah Boston, the league’s top defensive player, was ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs with a lower extremity injury. Isaiah James and Makayla Timpson are assigned to the club for the remainder of the postseason.
The Phantoms were also without forward Sato Sabally all season due to an injury sustained during the WNBA Finals, as well as guard Dana Evans for all but one game.
The Mists faced a challenge of their own Monday night, as a poor start left them down 26-10 at the end of the first quarter. But Stewart made a turnaround to ensure her team didn’t lose at home.
Both the Phantom and Mist miss the playoffs in 2025. The Phantom, now on a nine-game winning streak, holds a 2-0 series advantage this season over the Mist.
Defending champion Rose was upset by Breeze in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Their goalkeeper, Chelsea Gray, was awarded the Most Valuable Player award earlier Monday and was recognized on the field before the games.
After a successful round stop in New York – the second this season after setting a record attendance at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena in January – the league will return to its home base in Miami, where players will compete for a $600,000 prize pool.
Stewart said the league considered hosting the championship game at the Barclays as well before deciding to keep it as scheduled at their 1,000-seat stadium.
“There is (value) to go and win a championship in the place you built,” she said. “So, even though it’s a smaller arena and venue, this is where the banner is raised, this is where the rose is, and now we’re going to be fighting for that championship in the place we’ve been working all season.”
