Interim head coach Davy Arnaud was not at Austin FC’s 0-0 draw at FC Dallas, The Austin Chronicle reported on Sept. 24. The Chronicle said he was attending to a family emergency with the club’s support, and that assistant coach Terry Boss ran the match from the technical area.
“For me as an assistant coach, you know, and the rest of the staff, it’s our obligation to be able to step up so Davy can take care of his family the way he needs to,” Boss told the Chronicle. “We try to keep it as business as usual. The [players] are so supportive. They love Davy so much, and I think they definitely had a little bit extra motivation to play for Davy and what he’s going through.”
What the draw was
The club’s own recap said Brad Stuver stopped Kaick in the 11th minute, Jon Gallagher’s shot was saved in the second half, and Stuver made two more saves in stoppage time at Toyota Stadium. The Chronicle added that the shutout was Stuver’s fifth clean sheet of the season and that the result made seven MLS matches unbeaten. Austin FC Communications had already called the Frisco night a Team of the Matchday performance for Stuver.
Midfielder Besard Sabovic told the Chronicle: “We’re seven games [unbeaten], and we should do everything we can to continue this streak, but of course, it’s getting closer and closer. The season’s ending soon, so we need to start winning if we’re going to make it to the playoffs, which is everyone’s goal.”
The Chronicle described Saturday’s home match against San Diego as must-win territory because Nashville SC, LAFC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps are the next three opponents. It also said four points separated seven clubs from 8th through 14th, and that places 1 through 9 qualify for some form of postseason. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. CT at Q2 Stadium.
