Manchester United welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford in a huge game for next season’s Champions League places.

The Red Devils have won 107 times in history, with Villa winning 52 times.

There have been 42 draws between the two sides. Here are three fascinating storylines about the match tomorrow.

Champions League shootout

With England likely to take five spots in the Champions League next season, it is probable that fifth place will be enough to secure a spot in next season’s competition.

This is vital for United’s summer plans and for continuing to move in the right direction.

There is currently only goal difference splitting the two sides in third and fourth, but a win would give the Red Devils a valuable three-point cushion.

Crucially, it is a game United cannot afford to lose if they are serious about making next year’s Champions League party.

Michael Carrick home record

The Red Devils have begun to falter a little on the road, with a recent draw at West Ham United and a loss to Newcastle United in their previous league game.

Nonetheless, United remain victorious in all of Carrick’s home matches to date during his two spells as head coach.

The BBC report that, “Michael Carrick has won all five of his Premier League home games as Manchester United manager (one in 2021, four in 2026); only three managers have won each of their first six home matches in the competition: Sven-Göran Eriksson (first 9 in 2007), Carlo Ancelotti (first 7 in 2009), and Manuel Pellegrini (first 11 in 2013-14).”

Another Old Trafford victory would certainly be an extra bonus.

Fantastic home record vs Villa

It’s not just Carrick that enjoys a strong home record; United have also been very good at Old Trafford versus tomorrow’s opponents.

The club “have lost just two of their last 37 home league games against Aston Villa (winning 28 and drawing seven).”

The two losses were 0-1 defeats in December 2009 and September 2021.

Even in last season’s terrible 15th place finish, they defeated the Villans 2-0 on the last day of the season.
