Alyssa Liu won Olympic gold on Thursday night, the first Olympic medal for an American in women’s figure skating in 20 years.
The silver went to Kaori Sakamoto and the bronze to Japanese Muni Chiba, while American Amber Glenn took fifth place and Isabeau Levito took twelfth place. Liu earned the highest free skate score (150.20) of any skater on Thursday, moving her to become the first American women’s figure skater to win gold since Sarah Hughes in 2002.
The United States women’s hockey team also won gold after defeating Canada.
It took overtime, but the United States beat familiar foe Canada 2-1 in the gold medal game after Megan Keeler’s winning goal. The United States team trailed 1-0 until captain Hilary Knight scored the equalizer in the 58th minute. It is the third Olympic gold medal for the United States in women’s hockey. Since women’s hockey was introduced as an Olympic sport in 1998, the only two teams to have won gold have been the United States and Canada.
