Hamza Choudhury, a former England U21 international, has officially switched allegiances to Bangladesh. The 27-year-old Leicester City midfielder is set to make history as the first Premier League player to represent the Bengal Tigers, who are ranked 185th in the world.

Choudhury was born in Loughborough, England, but his roots trace back to his mother’s homeland, Bangladesh. He played seven times for England at the youth level but knew his senior opportunities with the Three Lions were off the table.

FIFA Clears the Path

The Bangladesh Football Federation shared the big news, confirming Choudhury’s eligibility. FIFA’s Player Status Chamber gave the green light for this transition under rules allowing players to change national teams if they’ve played three or fewer senior matches before turning 21.

“It’s Been in the Works”

Speaking to The Athletic, Choudhury opened up about his decision.

“I’ve always had it in the back of my mind to represent Bangladesh and its people. The fans there have been incredibly supportive. Every day, I get messages asking me to play for Bangladesh. It feels like the right move—not just for me, but to shine a light on Bangladesh in the football world.”

The midfielder also expressed hope that his presence would inspire future players and bring some much-needed exposure to the country on the international stage.

A Career of Ups and Downs

Choudhury made his debut for Leicester City back in 2017. Except for a season-long loan at Watford, he’s been a loyal servant to the Foxes. Despite Leicester’s recent struggles—they’re currently 17th in the Premier League under Ruud van Nistelrooy—Choudhury remains focused.

He featured in the club’s 4-0 defeat to Newcastle last weekend but has his sights set on helping Leicester climb out of the relegation zone. Up next, they face Wolves, who sit 19th, in what could be a pivotal match.

Looking Ahead to His Bangladesh Debut

Bangladesh will face India in March as part of the Asian Cup qualifiers. If all goes as planned, Choudhury will don the red and green jersey for the first time. The Bengal Tigers hope his experience and skill will breathe new life into a team that recently struggled in World Cup qualifiers.
